Yeon-woo, the heroine of "Sunshine," loses her father as a child due to an accident. Her mother remarries a flirting nightclub dancer just 10 years older than her. Moreover, Yeon-woo's mother flees with her second husband, leaving her daughter with an enormous debt.
Due to these difficulties, Yeon-woo must carve out her future on her own. She has to be strong, realistic and overcome lots of obstacles, according to Song. When moneylenders invade her house to look for her stepfather, Yeon-woo cynically says, "If you can find him, cut his legs off because they are his own means of living."
In the drama, Yeon-woo is willing to be a peddler to keep on living. She even tries to find a job at red-light districts.
"Until now, I've been a passive woman in dramas. I could not speak my own opinion, and in most cases, I could decide nothing by myself. Whenever something happened, I wept and relied on male partners," Song said. "I am tired of the characters. Maybe many viewers feel the same."
"Yeon-woo is not romantic and introspective," Song explained. "She is somewhat skeptical, cynical and does not open her mind to anybody except her little sister by a different father and a close friend who has secretly loved her for more than 20 years."
"I did not try to change my image intentionally, but I think it may be a turning point in my career."
Though Song is planning to show a cynical image on the TV screen, she seems optimistic like her former drama characters in real life. She received the best prize for the actress at the SBS award ceremony last year, which was criticized by celebrated scriptwriter Kim Su-hyun, who claimed she was not qualified.
"Kim has a reason for saying so. I also agree that my performance was not good enough to receive the prize. I will accept the criticism as motivation and show more development in this drama," Song said. "Sunshine" airs every Wednesday and Thursday at 9:55 p.m.
